We had a really busy weekend!

-3 warrant arrests
-We had a fight at 1705 S. Sandhill between two brothers and their pitbulls. Both of the brothers were cited.
-Another child was left unattended in the car. This time it was a 3 yo girl whose mother was gone for about 30 minutes. Luckily a patron heard the child crying and pulled her out through a partially opened window. She was very sweaty and our medics checked her out. Of course the mother was cited. Just so everyone knows how hot it can get inside a car, the temp of the car seat was 110 degrees.
-Once again, a weekend littered with family fights.
-A victim reported that he was robbed at 200 S. 1200 W. He was walking home when he passed two African American males. The two told the victim to give them his money. When he refused they claimed to have a knife. The victim gave them his money and the two ran off.
-Officer Fenn stopped a man at the Texaco, 1600 S. State. The driver had been drinking, failed the FST’s and was arrested.
-An Orem man reported that his 2002 Mazda Millenia was stolen. The owner found the car the next day in the Ridley’s parking lot.

-Feel good story of the weekend
Our fire guys responded to a report of a bunch of ducklings caught in a storm drain. They were able to make a scoop and picked up all of the ducklings one by one and returned them to their mother in a pond a short distance away. Let’s all say it together “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh”!

My name is Hannah Harkness, Miss Orem 2011. Each year on America’s roads more than 30,000 lives are lost due to traffic accidents. Many of these are caused by distracted driving.

We can do better than this.

This past Christmas Eve my friend’s car was hit head-on by a distracted driver trying to make a cell phone call. She, along with her husband and two small children were life-flighted to area hospitals. Her 18-month old baby died in her arms on Christmas day.

It is totally within our control to eliminate distracted driving when we are ready behind the wheel each time we turn on the ignition of our cars. I have teamed up with the Orem Department of Public Safety, Traffic Division to get the word out that no call or text is worth a life.

Something simple each one of us can do today is to make our car’s a NO PHONE ZONE. Take the pledge now at “readybehindthewheel.com” to make your car a NO PHONE ZONE and receive a free NO PHONE ZONE car sticker.

Remember, no text or call is worth a life.

Thanks,

Hannah Harkness
