911 Calls on Disconnected Cell Phones

Most people may not know that when you disconnect your cell phone it still works.  I am guilty of this too, but when you get a new cell phone we all like to give our old ones to the kids to play with which is fine.  However, even though the phone has no signal it still has the ability to call 911.  Just this year alone our dispatchers have taken over 800 emergency calls from disconnected cell phones.  As you can guess this is a big problem for us.  Not only does it take the dispatchers away from other emergencies but it takes a police officer off the street to try and locate the cell phone signal.  So if your going to give an old cell phone to you children please remove the battery that is only way to assure that they don’t call 911 on accident.  Thanks
